He Won't Eat His Vegetables

Good day, all. Our webmaster is on vacation, so I guess there's no content of our own to which we can point this week. Maybe tomorrow.

In the meantime, Brad Curran, of Comics Should Be Good, posts about his critical biases and virginity. Like everyone else, let's leave his genitals alone, but as far as the critical bias, Curran seems to feel that people are attacking his tastes just because he likes superhero comics. And if some people are, they shouldn't, but neither should Curran go on to tell "serious cartoonists and everyone else not published by Marvel, DC, and Dark Horse and Image" to "fuck off." All he's really doing here is trying to further this really dopey divide between "indie" comics readers and "(new) mainstream" or "superhero" comics readers, rationalizing it by pointing to the indie-only jerks trying to force their comics on him, and the dumb idea that "heartbreaking works of staggering genius" and "the latest literary black and white masterpiece" are created to not be entertaining. As far as I'm concerned, Chris Ware and every other serious cartoonist is trying to entertain you, however you may feel about the results, and if they are trying to do other things as well, what's the problem? I don't think Grant Morrison is any less serious a writer for writing Frankenstein, and it seems kind of insulting to not think of him as serious, especially if you really enjoy what he does.

I did like the comments posted after the piece, though--they really run the gamut of comics fandom. You've got the guy who thinks indie cartoonists are doing work just to knock you over the head with how cool and sophisticated they are; you've got the person who doggedly posts a link to Kevin Huizenga's stuff, trying to convince Curran that there's some indie comics he will like; and there are plenty of sensible folk who say, "why not just like what you like and not worry about what other people like or think about your tastes?" You know, if you want to have your opinion respected, maybe refrain from telling others to fuck off, or shove their books up their butt? I'm not immune or anything; I've said similar things, and from that personal experience I can say that it really undermines whatever respect people may have for your opinion. Also, adults know the importance of green vegetables in their diet.
